ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity: which one for which job

They all answer questions, so people assume they are interchangeable. In practice they have different temperaments, and using the right one for the job saves hours.

I use all five most weeks. Here is roughly how I split the work.

Perplexity — for finding out what is true

It searches and shows you where each claim came from. When the question is factual and current — what a permit costs, whether a plugin is still maintained, what a competitor charges — start here, because you can click through and check.

Claude — for writing and for code you have to live with

Strong at long, careful work: rewriting a page so it sounds like a person, going through a file and explaining what each part does, catching the thing that will break later. It will also tell you when your idea is wrong, which is more useful than it sounds.

ChatGPT — for the first draft of almost anything

The most generally capable starting point, and the one with the most tools bolted on. Good for getting from a blank page to something you can react to. React to it, though. First drafts read like first drafts.

Gemini — for anything already inside Google

If your work lives in Docs, Sheets, and Gmail, it is sitting next to your material. Also strong with images and long documents.

Grok — for what people are saying right now

Closest to the pulse of live conversation, and looser in tone. Useful for the temperature of a topic today, less so for anything you need to be careful about.

The pattern

Research in Perplexity. Draft in ChatGPT. Refine and check in Claude. Whichever you use, the rule is the same: these tools are confident whether or not they are right, and they cannot see your website, your customers, or your town. You are not asking an oracle. You are working with a fast, tireless assistant who has never been to Tuscaloosa.

If you want to sit down and actually do this on your own site — pick the tool, write the prompt, see what comes back and fix it — that is what my coaching hours are for.
