Choosing tools

Squarespace, Wix, WordPress, or plain HTML?

There is no best answer here, only trade-offs. What matters is which trade you are making, and whether you made it on purpose.

Squarespace

Good for: someone who wants it to look decent immediately and will make their own edits.
Costs: a monthly fee forever, and it is not small.
The trade: you rent. Stop paying and the site is gone. You cannot export it as a working site, only as content. Fast enough, but you are on their speed and their limits.

Wix

Good for: the same person, with more drag-and-drop freedom.
Costs: monthly, plus upsells.
The trade: that freedom is how most Wix sites end up slow and strange on phones. The tool will happily let you build something that looks fine on your laptop and falls apart in a customer's hand.

WordPress

Good for: sites that will genuinely grow — many pages, a real blog, a shop, several people posting.
Costs: hosting, plus plugins, plus somebody's attention.
The trade: it is the most capable and the most maintenance. Plugins need updating, and an unattended WordPress site is the most common way small businesses get hacked. It is a good tool with a chore attached.

Plain HTML

Good for: a small business site of a few pages that needs to be fast, findable, and cheap to keep.
Costs: the build, then roughly the price of a domain each year. Hosting for a site like this is often free.
The trade: you cannot log in and drag things around. Changes mean editing a file — which is easy once someone shows you, and impossible if nobody ever does.

How to choose

Ask two questions. First: how often will this change? Weekly means you want something with a dashboard. Twice a year means plain files are fine. Second: what happens if you stop paying? If the answer is that everything vanishes, price that in — five years of a monthly plan usually costs more than a built site plus a decade of domain renewals.

Most of the small businesses I meet here need three to five pages that load fast on a phone and are correct. That is the cheapest kind of site to build well, and it is the kind that gets sold the most expensively.
